RE: Precinct by Precinct Returns for the May 27, 2014 Election

The Secretary of State is the repository for all election results in the State of Texas. Therefore, you must file your precinct-by-precinct election returns with the Secretary of State, pursuant to Section 67.017 of the Texas Election Code (the “Code”).

The Election Code also requires the returns to be submitted in an electronic form.  We have designed three methods by which you can submit this report to our office:

  1. You can put your returns in a Secretary of State defined Excel spread sheet and attach it to a web browser;
  2. You can attach a file from your vote count machine (confer with your vendor for specific details);
  3. You can “build” your own report by inputting your precinct returns directly into the system.  You will find the instructions on how to report the precinct returns on our web site at:

You will find the instructions on how to report the precinct returns on our web site (PDF).

The precinct by precinct returns are required to be filed not later than 30 days after the election. Please do not file your returns before your election has been officially canvassed. You must include both the early votes and election day votes by precinct for all races reported.

The online tool for submitting your precinct by precinct returns will be available for your election results on May 28, 2014.

If you canceled your election, please go to the web browser and follow the cancel procedures that are included in the instructions posted on our website.  Please be reminded that the precinct by precinct must be completed online and is different from the canvass report that must be filed with the state party chair.

If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact Monica Brown or Natalie Marquez toll-free at 1-800-252-VOTE (8683).
